Tour of VISUAL – Centre for Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre 20th May 2009

I have just completed a truly wonderful tour of VISUAL (May 20, 2009) – the new Visual Arts Centre and George Bernard Shaw Theatre in Carlow. The tour was presented by the approachable and enthusistic Carissa Farrell, the Director. Expecting to be quickly shown around some large rooms, I was pleasantly delighted to realise we were getting the full tour – nuts and bolts – behind the scenes, as well as an audio-visual presentation and small concert by local musicians in the George Bernard Shaw Theatre. And that the space was truly wonderful and amazing.
The most striking room for me was the main gallery – it was absolutely huge, with the most amazing diffused white light. However, the digital gallery was also a really great space – really great for digital media, installations, videos and films. Another highlight was the explanation of the state of the art audio/sound and lighting equipment in the George Bernard Shaw Theatre. The newly appointed technical manager with an expertise in Lighting – Joe Flavin. Joe gave us excellent demonstrations of the lighting and the audio capabilities of the theatre – looks like what once was labour intensive jobs of rigging lighting and connecting audio cables, can all be done by clicks of switches. However, his lighting demonstration was really quite beautiful – this theatre is going to be such a rich resource for carlow people and visitors alike.
The arts centre will be opening in Autumn 2009, but the staff of the centre are providing tours of the gallery spaces and the 350 seat state of the art theatre. This was a truly wonderful and unexpected suprise to discover the extent of the spaces in this new centre. I was aware that VISUAL was being built, but had not been around that part of town for a while so hadn’t realised that the building was complete.

I was doing a search to get some photos of it when I came across your blog post, isn’t it amazing, I had the privilege of seeing it all last Tuesday with the Carlow Business club. Really looking forward to it opening, what a fantastic resource.
